New locked protocol requirements

Protocol versions lock at registration, giving suppliers the certainty to scale

Protocol requirements shouldn't be moving targets. That's why Isometric has introduced locked protocol requirements across all pathways, giving suppliers the certainty to build processes, allocate resources, and plan long-term.

How it works

When a project begins registration with Isometric, its protocol version locks. The requirements in place at the start of registration are the requirements used for credit issuance throughout the project's crediting period. This means suppliers can plan with certainty, knowing exactly what evidence needs to be submitted for certification.

Predictable updates on a six-month cadence

Isometric's protocols will continue to evolve based on scientific advances, technological developments, and real-world deployments. Protocols won’t be updated more frequently than once every six months, ensuring predictability for buyers, suppliers, and reviewers. For suppliers with a locked protocol version, nothing changes.

Adopting new versions

New projects must use the most recent certified protocol version available, and when Isometric releases updated protocol versions, existing projects can voluntarily adopt them. New protocol versions typically introduce support for new technologies, storage pathways, or durability options—giving suppliers access to the latest methodologies while maintaining the certainty of their locked requirements.

In exceptional circumstances, Isometric can require mandatory version adoption—such as when a substantive vulnerability is discovered—to ensure every certificate issued represents a tonne of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere.
