Isometric batches protocol updates into two releases a year, in spring and autumn, to keep them predictable and easy to plan around.
The Autumn Update 2026 adds one new module, giving projects a unified way to account for carbon moved through shared infrastructure. It also aligns two modules with the EU CRCF and refines requirements for Biogenic Carbon Capture and Storage (Bio-CCS), Biochar Storage in the Built Environment, and Biomass or Bio-oil Storage in Salt Caverns.
New
Shared CO₂ Transport & Infrastructure Module v1.0
A unified approach for Bio-CCS and Direct Air Capture (DAC) projects to account for carbon moved or stored through shared infrastructure. Aligned with the CRCF.
- Carbon is tracked from capture to storage with a chain of custody and a mass balance that allocates losses to each stage of the journey.
- Projects can use a third-party operator’s data and evidence, including monthly receipts, for certification.
Updated
Bio-CCS Protocol v1.5
Updated to support shared transport infrastructure and feedstock accounting requirements, and to clarify measurement for a wider range of capture setups.
- Now supports the new Shared CO₂ Transport & Infrastructure Module and the updated Biomass Feedstock Accounting Module, and provides clearer rules for measuring carbon captured in batches or intermittent streams.
- Both updates will also be reflected in the next version of the DAC Protocol.
Biomass Feedstock Accounting Module v1.4
Updated to expand eligible feedstocks and land management approaches. Aligned with the CRCF.
- Purpose-grown feedstocks on marginal land, harvested standing biomass, and projects actively managing landscapes are now eligible, provided carbon stocks are maintained or enhanced.
- New chain-of-custody requirements and a ban on feedstocks from converted high-value ecosystems, plus an option to account for counterfactual storage over time.
Biochar Storage in the Built Environment Module v1.2
Updated requirements for documenting biochar stored in built materials over time, plus a new contaminant risk assessment.
- Storage is now accounted for over 200 years, covering a material’s service life and its first reuse.
- Project-specific assessment of placement, exposure, and end of life replaces default reversal models.
- Biochar stored in concrete and in the sub-surface layers of asphalt is eligible. Surface layers of asphalt are ineligible, because they wear away and can’t be traced.
Biomass or Bio-oil Storage in Salt Caverns Module v1.3
Updated with additional methods for detecting and quantifying gas emissions.
- Projects can now use general continuous gas detection, paired with at least monthly gas composition sampling, with methane and other carbon-bearing emissions estimated conservatively from that sampling.
Updates automatically apply to new projects and those yet to start validation. Projects already in validation or validated can choose to upgrade.
