Isometric has issued Pacific Biochar’s first verified carbon removal credits under the Biochar Production and Storage Protocol. The 3,042 credits were generated by the Humboldt Sawmill project, in Scotia, California.

Pacific Biochar partners with new and existing bioenergy facilities to produce biochar, retrofitting current plants and optimizing new ones. The resulting biochar is primarily applied to agricultural land in the region of production, where it can improve crop yields, water conservation, and fertilizer efficiency.

Josiah Hunt, CEO of Pacific Biochar, said: "We’re excited to be issuing our first credits with Isometric. Over the past months, two things have stood out: their exceptionally talented, well‑organized team and the scientific rigor they apply at every step."

The Humboldt Sawmill project produces biochar from sustainable sawmill residues, sourced in line with California state and national regulations for forest management and timber harvesting and Isometric's Biomass Feedstock Accounting (BFA) Module.

These credits were certified under Isometric’s Biochar Production and Storage Protocol—the most scientifically rigorous on the market. They are also the first credits issued under v1.3 of Isometric’s BFA Module, which significantly expanded the range of biomass feedstocks eligible for use under Isometric protocols.

All measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) data were managed through Isometric Certify, with automated data submission via Mangrove Systems’ digital MRV platform. This project was independently validated and verified by 350Solutions

The data and calculations behind each credit are publicly available on the Isometric Registry, providing a permanent audit trail for every credit issued and allowing all underlying information to be independently reviewed and scrutinized.

This issuance represents an important step in scaling scientifically rigorous biochar carbon removal.
