Announcing the Reforestation Area Suitability Check

Instantly screen your project area for eligibility

Isometric has launched the Area Suitability Check—a self-serve tool that gives reforestation suppliers instant feedback on whether their proposed project area is eligible under Isometric’s protocol.

Assessing the eligibility of a project area is a critical step toward validation, but it is often time-consuming, requiring an in-depth understanding of protocol requirements and repeated checks against multiple datasets. Now, suppliers can simply upload their geographic data—as a GeoJSON or KML file—for an instant visual assessment.

The tool automatically checks whether a project area overlaps with land that may be ineligible for reforestation, accounting for:

  1. Net warming impacts: where planting could increase warming due to albedo effects
  2. Recent deforestation: land cleared in the last 10 years
  3. Terrestrial or tidal wetlands: peatlands, marshes, and mangroves
  4. Water stress zones: regions projected to see declining water resources

If overlaps are found that may affect an area’s eligibility, the tool provides clear guidance on next steps—such as removing specific areas or preparing additional evidence for a full eligibility assessment.

This screening gives suppliers confidence that they’re meeting initial protocol requirements and using the most up-to-date data to assess their eligibility. By providing fast, automated feedback, the Area Suitability Check helps suppliers make project design decisions sooner—saving time, reducing costs, and accelerating climate impact.

Jeffrey Brown, Co-Founder and Chief Development Officer of Nature Focus, said: “The Area Suitability Check helped our team quickly identify parts of our project area that could have resulted in net warming, allowing us to take fast, preemptive action in our project design. It's a rigorous, fast, and simple way to ensure your project is protocol compliant from day one.”
