Scaling carbon removal requires long-term certainty. That's why Isometric has introduced extended crediting periods across all pathways, giving suppliers the certainty to plan long-term, secure financing, and land offtake agreements.
The crediting period is the length of time a supplier's Project Design Document remains valid and the project can generate carbon removal certificates without re-validation.
Previously, Isometric's minimum crediting period was five years. We've now doubled this, giving suppliers the space to focus on growth instead of re-validation. While crediting periods define how long a project can operate without re-validation, projects must still undergo regular verification to issue credits.
How it works
When a project is validated, it has at least a full decade to issue credits. There are two pathway-specific exceptions to this:
DAC and Bio-CCS: 15 years
Aligned with CRCF standards, Direct Air Capture (DAC) and Biogenic Carbon Capture and Storage (Bio-CCS) projects each have a 15-year crediting period. These pathways involve substantial infrastructure investments, so the extended period provides the certainty suppliers and investors need to deploy and scale these carbon removal technologies.
Biosphere: Bespoke
Biosphere projects have crediting periods determined on a case-by-case basis to account for the natural growth cycles of trees and site conditions. Carbon removal from forests happens over decades, not years, so crediting periods must align with the biological reality of how long it takes for plants to mature and capture carbon from the atmosphere.
What this means for existing projects
Long-term crediting periods are immediately available to all new projects, and to existing projects from their next verification. This phased approach ensures continuity for existing projects while providing long-term certainty from day one for new ones.
